The Aloha Shirt Brands - Aloha Kanaka 1950's

Aloha Kanaka

The word "Kanaka" translates to man, person, mankind while "Aloha" means affection, peace, compassion and mercy. Since the middle of the 19th century, it also has come to be used as an English greeting to say goodbye and hello.

Aloha Kanaka was an imprint of Art Vogue, a large menswear manufacturer located in San Francisco in the 1950's.

With a stylish four way layout, hula maidens wear a lei and flower behind their ear as they dance on a exotic lime green and navy flower. A lone man plays the drum, surrounded by star flowers and empty space. The word Hawaii and clusters of palms near pools of water add to the tropical feeling that exudes from this shirt. Two chest front pockets.

Like bright pink tropical birds peeking out from behind vibrant green leaves, the bird-of-paradise flowers are striking against the rich brown of this Aloha Kanaka shirt. These flowers, often called crane flowers, are a slow-growing, evergreen perennial native to the subtropical coasts of southern Africa and found in backyards and botanical gardens in Hawaiʻi.

Within each golden bamboo frame on this Aloha Kanaka shirt is a scene from ancient Hawai‘i: kalo (taro) from a lo‘i, a fragrant lei, anthuriums and hibiscus flowers, pineapples and coconut trees, a surfer and a fisherman, an ‘ukulele, a bounty of bananas. These snapshots convey the simplistic beauty of everyday life in the Islands.

This chic black Aloha Kanaka shirt blends traditional with modern. The simple line artwork of a musician strumming a slack-key guitar and another fishing in a mountain stream contrasts with the stylish design of a vibrant flower, simple in form yet bold in color, that makes this shirt dressy enough to tuck in.
